HIPPA Overview The Health Insurance Portability & Accountability Act (HIPAA) of 1996 was enacted to prevent inappropriate use or disclosure of individuals' health information and to require organizations which use health information to protect that information and the systems which store, transmit, and process it. Thus another regulation that you as the employer must be compliant with or face the consequences of a possible lawsuit by an employee.
